Acne – Acne vulgaris is a skin condition which commonly affects teenagers and adults. Many people present with blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and pustules. Contrary to popular belief, hygiene and foods do not cause acne. Changes in hormone levels like androgens and testosterone can cause acne. Overgrowth of bacteria, especially Proprionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) is also a contributing factor. Acne is classified as mild, moderate or severe, and depends on the type of lesion and body location. For some, this can be a chronic skin condition and if severe enough, can result in scarring. Common treatment includes benzoyl peroxide, retinoids and antibiotics.
